What happened during The Belgian COngo 1908 -1960
This was the name King Leopold II gave to Congo in the 1800's to the early 1900's. He made a Belgian colony in Congo. One of the most well known acts of Leopold was the genocide that had great impact on the Congolese. Leopold's private army would march into the villages of Congo and hold the women of the household's and hold them hostage and the men would have to go into the forrest and get the monthly quota of rubber supply. When the rubber became high in popularity the quotas began to rise as well. After a while the jungle became dry of rubber. From all the tapping of rubber there were scarce amounts left. This made men more desperate to find more areas that weren't tapped dry. Making men walk for days and weeks to find a new source of rubber. This leaving many men on the journey worked to death. If the men failed there monthly quotas the consequences were horrific. Villages were burned down, some would have there hands cut off, and have their children mutilated. The effect of this made congolese refuge to the jungles where there was little food and water resources. One of the most notorious acts was Leopold's first project.
This project was to build a railroad from one city to another. This railroad took ten years to complete, and two hundred Africans each month died during the build process.
